UPDATED: ConfigureCaptureMachine - Preparing An Application Capture Reference Machine Print E-mail

Appendix A of Microsoft's App-V 4.5 Sequencing Guide has 12 pages of screenshots that comprise two of their three best practice configuration steps for a sequencing machine. These steps are good for any type application capture - whether you are doing traditional application packaging or virtualization with any product. We've scripted those steps for you.              (WKU2ANAAY3Z6)

These best practice preconfigurations will work for all of these tools:
  • Wise Package Studio
  • InstallShield AdminStudio
  • Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V)
  • VMware Thinapp
  • Citrix XenApp
  • InstallFree
  • Xenocode / SpoonStudio

The basic best practices are:

  1. Turn off services that create configuration noise during your capture.
  2. Create a placeholder printer to ensure machine-wide printer configurations are not captured.
  3. Create a placeholder ODBC connection to ensure machine-wide ODBC configurations are not captured.

This scripted solution does all of the above for you and works on both XP and Windows 7. The services configuration is customizable by changing the control file used for our WinServicesOptimizer.vbs tool.
